A structural and mechanical study of the maintenance of archaeological Al-brass alloy by simulation method

Prof. Dr. (Omar Fadel Abdullah), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Oras Abdulhadi Hussein), and Assist. Lect. (Marwan Abdulkarim Abdulbaqi), lecturers in the Physics Department at the College of Pure Sciences, University of Samarra, published a scientific paper in the Physics and Chemistry of Solid State journal, which is indexed in Q3 within the Scopus database.

The paper is titled \”Structural and Mechanical Study for the Restoration of the Ancient Al-brass Alloy (Copper–Zinc–Aluminum) Using the Simulation Method,\” in which the researchers aimed to study the casting process of the antiquated Al-brass alloy produced at 76% copper, 22% zinc, and 2% aluminum, and to study the effect of chemical treatment according to the methods used in heritage conservation.

The researchers applied the most relevant scientific methods in chemical treatment of archaeological objects for a duration of 24 hours, immersing the alloys in a dilute sulfuric acid solution (H₂SO₄) at 8% concentration at room temperature.

The study results showed that the damaged alloy exhibited lower structural properties with a low hardness value, compared to the laser-treated sample which possessed the best structural properties. Also, X-ray diffraction results, atomic force microscopy imaging, and hardness measurements indicate that this method is effective in conservation.

For his part, the Department of Media and Government Communications congratulates the physics lecturers on their new scientific achievement, wishing them continued success in their academic and research careers.
