Department of Chemistry Organizes a Scientific Course on Enzyme Purification
The Department of Chemistry at the College of Education for Pure Sciences – University of Samarra organized a scientific course entitled “Enzyme Purification”, presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Naha Ali Hadi.
The lecturer aimed to explain the mechanism of purifying, separating, and isolating enzymes from other components in order to obtain a highly pure product with high activity. This process includes releasing enzymes from cells by breaking cell walls using various methods such as grinding, freezing, or employing lytic enzymes like lysozyme.
Dr. Hadi also highlighted advanced techniques for enzyme isolation, most notably chromatography in its various forms, including ion-exchange chromatography, size-exclusion chromatography, and affinity chromatography, in addition to dialysis and electrophoresis, with the aim of achieving the highest degree of purity.
The lecture concluded with a set of recommendations, including the importance of enzyme purification and isolation from contaminants to enhance their activity and stability, as well as understanding their pivotal role in many industrial and medical applications, such as pharmaceutical and food industries, particularly in the production of biofuels, making them a fundamental pillar of modern biotechnology.
