A Scientific Seminar on the Importance of Drip Irrigation for Trees in Achieving Sustainable Agriculture
The College of Agriculture at Samarra University organized a scientific seminar entitled “The Importance of Drip Irrigation for Trees,” as part of the college’s efforts to promote awareness of modern agricultural technologies and the rational use of water resources.
The seminar addressed the importance of drip irrigation in reducing water waste by directing it directly to the root zone. This contributes to increased water use efficiency and reduces losses resulting from evaporation or deep soil seepage. Furthermore, it highlighted its role in improving tree growth, increasing productivity, and enhancing crop quality. The seminar also demonstrated that this technology helps reduce the spread of plant diseases and weeds due to the limited wetting of the foliage and soil surface, which positively impacts plant health and production sustainability.
The seminar pointed out that drip irrigation contributes to increased fertilizer use efficiency by allowing for its addition with the irrigation water. This improves nutrient absorption and reduces loss. Additionally, it reduces operational costs by decreasing the need for labor and lowering the energy consumption used in pumping. She also emphasized that this method is particularly suitable for arid environments and water-scarce regions, given its high efficiency in water resource management and its ability to achieve the best possible agricultural yield.
The seminar featured presentations by Assistant Lecturers Ali Faisal Aziz and Yousef Ali Mohammed, who delivered a simplified scientific overview of the system’s operation and its importance in supporting sustainable agriculture and preserving natural resources.
This seminar is part of a series of scientific activities organized by the College of Agriculture at Samarra University to support students, farmers, and those interested in agriculture, and to promote the use of modern technologies in the agricultural sector and the achievement of food security.
