Training Course at the Department of Chemistry Explains the Effects of Antibiotics on the Liver and Kidneys
The Department of Chemistry at the College of Education for Pure Sciences, University of Samarra, organized a training course entitled “Antibiotics and Their Effects on the Liver and Kidneys”, presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Noha Ali Hadi and Assistant Professor Sarah Saad Mohammed Jawad.
Dr. Hadi explained the importance of antibiotics used in treating infections caused by microorganisms. These drugs work by killing germs or inhibiting their growth and include bacteria, fungi, and parasites, as they belong to a broader group known as antimicrobial compounds.
Meanwhile, Dr. Jawad highlighted the significant therapeutic role played by antibiotics, in addition to a number of side effects. These drugs eliminate both beneficial and harmful bacteria alike, making the intestines susceptible to digestive disorders such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, or constipation.
On the other hand, the lecturers addressed the impact of some antibiotics on liver function, as detected through blood tests known as liver function tests, which requires patients with liver diseases to exercise caution and avoid antibiotics that are metabolized in the liver.
In the same context, the course presenters warned against certain antibiotics that may cause kidney failure due to their toxic effects on the kidneys. Statistics indicate that acute kidney failure caused by medications may occur in at least one out of every five cases. Health authorities called for the necessity of using antibiotics according to medical guidelines and under specialist supervision to avoid complications and ensure patient safety.
