Department of Life Sciences Organizes a Scientific Seminar on the Impact of Physical and Chemical Properties on Fish Growth in the Tigris River

The Department of Life Sciences at the College of Education for Pure Sciences – University of Samarra organized a scientific seminar entitled “The Effect of Certain Physical and Chemical Properties of the Tigris River Water on Fish Growth and Viability”, delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Hisham Fadhil Shakir.

The presenter aimed to introduce the most important physical and chemical properties of the Tigris River water, assess water quality, and identify the extent of water pollution through changes in the concentrations of these factors affecting water quality.

Dr. Shakir explained the various sources of pollution, including the influx of pollutants resulting from floods, agricultural runoff, the discharge of polluted water from factories, and municipal wastewater released into the river, as well as the impact of power generation stations and the presence of dams on the river’s water quality.

The lecturer also pointed out the causes of pollution, most notably the deterioration of water quality, which leads to negative effects on fish health, particularly on the respiratory, digestive, and reproductive systems, as well as gamete formation. This, in turn, affects fertilization and hatching rates and the life cycle of fish offspring, in addition to its impact on physiological and biochemical functions in fish tissues and blood.
