Department of Chemistry Organizes a Scientific Course on Drawing Organic Compounds Using ChemWord
The Department of Chemistry at the College of Education for Pure Sciences – University of Samarra organized a scientific course entitled “Drawing Organic Compounds Using ChemWord”, presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Diana Abdulkarim Shakir and Assistant Professor Dr. Jabbar Muadh Tarfah.
The course aimed to introduce the ChemWord program as a scientific computer application used for drawing organic and chemical compounds and reactions in a professional and academically accredited manner. It also covered drawing organic structures (aliphatic, aromatic, and cyclic), illustrating chemical reactions with arrows, writing functional groups and structural formulas, and naming compounds according to the IUPAC system.
The lecturers explained the possibility of inserting the produced drawings into scientific research papers, reports, and Word documents, emphasizing the preference for using ChemDraw, particularly for chemistry students—especially those specializing in organic chemistry—as well as its usefulness for chemistry lecturers and researchers, and students of pharmacy, medicine, and chemical engineering in scientific laboratories.
The course concluded with several important recommendations, most notably that the program is easy to use after training and practice, produces scientifically accurate drawings, supports systematic IUPAC nomenclature, and allows exporting drawings to Word and PDF formats approved by scientific journals.
