Faculty Member in the Department of Chemistry Participates in an International Conference in Turkey
Dr. Bakr Ismail Jasim, a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry at the College of Education for Pure Sciences – University of Samarra, participated in the 8th International Eurasian Conference on Biological and Chemical Sciences, held in Turkey, in cooperation with the Eurasia Research, Development, Science and Technology Center.
He presented his research entitled:
“Design of a ZIF-8 Functionalized Glassy Carbon Electrode-Based Electrochemical Sensor for High-Sensitivity TBHQ Determination.”
The researcher aimed, through this study, to fabricate an electrochemical sensor based on a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8), one of the advanced porous materials within metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), which is characterized by high chemical stability and a large surface area.
The study focused on employing ZIF-8 alone and in combination with gold nanoparticles to improve the performance of electrochemical sensors, as a rapid and simple alternative to conventional analytical methods for detecting chemical substances. The fabricated sensor demonstrated high electrical sensitivity for the detection of the synthetic antioxidant tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), which is widely used in edible oils due to its high effectiveness in slowing oxidation, thermal stability, and low cost.
