Chemistry Department Organizes a Scientific Seminar on the Role of Vitamins and Minerals in the Immune System
The Chemistry Department at the College of Education for Pure Sciences, University of Samarra, organized a scientific seminar entitled “The Effect of Vitamins and Minerals on the Immune System.” The seminar was presented by Dr. Rana Raad Zanzal and Assistant Lecturer Reem Ibrahim Mahdi.
The presenters highlighted the role of vitamins and minerals as a primary line of defense for the body against pathogenic agents such as viruses, bacteria, and parasites. They also emphasized their important role in enhancing immunity through vitamin intake, which increases the activity of immune cells that protect the body from oxidative stress, particularly through the consumption of vitamin C. The lecturers also discussed the importance of vitamin D3 in maintaining the balance of immune cells.
In addition, the seminar stressed the importance of minerals in strengthening the immune system, such as zinc, which enhances joint health and whose deficiency is associated with weakened immunity, as well as iron, which is an essential element for vital body functions, as its deficiency negatively affects general health.
The seminar concluded with a set of recommendations, the most important of which emphasized that malnutrition negatively affects immune system performance and damages physical barriers such as mucous membranes and the skin, making it easier for bacteria and viruses to enter the body. Furthermore, malnutrition leads to changes in genes associated with immunity, which affects the body’s ability to respond to diseases.
