The University of Samarra – Two professors from our university publish a joint paper in a journal Biochemical and Cellular Archives

Dr. (Shaimaa Hassan Ali) and faculty (Yawz Hamid Mahmoud) from the College of Education, Department of Biology at Samarra University, in partnership with Dr. (Sarah Qahtan) from Tikrit University, College of Science, and Professor (Hassan Ali Handush) from the General Company for the Pharmaceutical Industry and Medical Supplies Micro Department published a paper entitled “Antimicrobial Activity of Four Selected Wild Mushrooms in Iraq.”

The abstract:
In this study, the antimicrobial activity of Boletus luridus, Pleurotus nebrodensis P.ostreatus, and Trametes trogii methanol extracts was evaluated against some yeast and bacterial pathogens. The phytochemical analysis reveals that the extracts were a rich source of active compounds of which the most important are secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, phenols, flavonoids, tannins, and terpenoids. The wild mushrooms extracts showed varying degrees of inhibition on the microbial pathogen. Trametes trogii was more effective than the rest of the mushrooms and inhibited the growth of most microorganisms.B.luridus, showed only activity against Candid parapsilosis, Salmonella typhi, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, while Poletus ostreatus produced inhibitory against S.cerevisis, Shigella sp. and Staphylococcus aureus. The mushroom P.nebrodensis exhibited no antimicrobial activities against yeast and bacterial pathogen.
