A Scientific Seminar at the College of Agriculture on Aquaponics as a Food Solution
The College of Modern Agriculture at Samarra University held a scientific seminar entitled “Aquaponics and its Role in Achieving Agricultural Sustainability.” This seminar was part of the college’s scientific activities aimed at introducing agricultural technologies that contribute to increased production and the efficient use of natural resources.
The seminar addressed the concept of diversified aquaponics, a feeding system that integrates fish farming and plant cultivation in a closed system based on water reuse. This system allows for the production of fish feed itself and achieves high efficiency in water use.
The presenters reviewed the system’s components, which include a tank that provides essential nutrients for the plants, a cultivation unit that allows these nutrients to be transferred, and a water feeding system that transports natural water rich in nutrients to the plants and then returns it clean to the tank. The seminar also discussed various types of native plants, including water flow systems (NFTs), forest water culture (DWC), and grass culture in growing media such as gravel or expanded grass.
As a result, this system offers numerous benefits, most notably its efficient water use through overall reuse, increased production of both fish and plants, reduced reliance on fish-preferred feed, and a lower environmental impact. It is a closed system, thus protecting against pollution.
The seminar will include presentations by:
Assistant Lecturer Ali Faisal Aziz,
Assistant Teacher Abeer Majeed Shaker,
Assistant Teacher Bilal Saad Mutlaq, and
Assistant Teacher Noor Al-Huda Hamid Hassan.
This seminar is part of the College of Agriculture’s commitment to supporting agricultural practices and encouraging students and researchers to adopt modern approaches to food security based on natural resources. Media and Government Communication Department
