The College of Agriculture at Samarra University organized a workshop titled

“The Role of Green Spaces in Promoting Mental Health.” This workshop was part of the college’s ongoing efforts to highlight the relationship between the natural environment and human mental health from both scientific and societal perspectives.

The workshop addressed the importance of nature in supporting mental health by exploring its historical roots and scientific foundations. It explained how green spaces affect the brain and mood by enhancing mental alertness, increasing serotonin (the “happiness hormone”), and contributing to improved focus and concentration. The workshop also highlighted how public parks and gardens serve as oases of tranquility within cities, providing an environment conducive to relaxation and escaping the pressures of daily life.

Furthermore, the workshop demonstrated the direct biological role of green spaces in reducing stress and anxiety levels by lowering cortisol levels. It also emphasized their role in encouraging physical activity and fostering social interaction, all of which positively impact mental health and quality of life.

The workshop concluded by noting that green spaces promote mental well-being and quality of life. The workshop was presented by Assistant Teacher Afrah Ibrahim Saleh, Assistant Teacher Tayba Mohammed Ali, and Assistant Teacher Samar Yousef Saadoun. They emphasized the importance of raising community awareness to overcome the challenges facing the preservation of green spaces, stressing the role of governments and institutions in supporting these efforts, as well as the importance of community participation and individual responsibility in protecting and developing the natural environment.

At the conclusion of the workshop, it was emphasized that investing in nature is an investment in human mental and physical health, and that green spaces are not a luxury but a fundamental necessity for achieving psychological well-being and a high quality of life.
