Department of Life Sciences Organizes a Scientific Seminar on Human Rights Day
The Department of Life Sciences at the College of Education for Pure Sciences – University of Samarra organized a scientific seminar entitled “Human Rights Day,” delivered by Assistant Lecturer Ibrahim Radam Ibrahim.
The presenter focused on the historical background of the issuance of the Declaration, which came in the aftermath of the tragedies of World War II to protect human dignity. The Declaration was prepared by an international committee chaired by Eleanor Roosevelt, giving the document a global humanitarian dimension.
The lecturer also discussed the legal structure of the Declaration, which consists of 30 articles covering civil and political rights, as well as economic, social, and cultural rights. He emphasized that, despite its non-binding legal nature, it has become a fundamental reference for many international treaties and conventions.
The seminar further highlighted the legal and political importance of the Declaration as the foundation from which the two International Covenants of 1966 emerged, in addition to its role in interpreting laws by national and international courts.
At the conclusion of the seminar, emphasis was placed on the continued violations related to wars, conflicts, forced migration, and discrimination, along with a call for the activation of the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights within national legislations and systems to enhance the protection of human rights and promote justice and equality.
