Engineering College Hosts Experts to Discuss the Role of 3D Printing in Architectural Documentation and Heritage Management

The College of Engineering at the University of Samarra held a specialized workshop titled “The Impact of 3D Printing Technology on Architectural Output,” presented by academic architect (Prof. Dr. Muwafaq Jawad Al-Taee), Prof. Dr. Kadhim Faris Dhamad (Faculty Member at the University of Baghdad), and Dr. Ali Majid Hamid (Faculty Member at the College of Engineering at the University of Samarra).

Prof. Dr. Muwafaq Jawad Al-Taee presented the first axis, focusing on the utilization of modern engineering techniques in the field of architectural documentation, particularly the use of laser scanning and photogrammetric registration.

In a related context, Dr. Jawad explained that these techniques aim to establish a centralized geographical database for archaeological sites through 3D visualization, linking them with descriptive data to facilitate the management and periodic monitoring of archaeological sites, citing the experience of the city of Mosul as an applied example.

Subsequently, Prof. Dr. Kadhim Faris Dhamad presented a fundamental distinction regarding the impact of modern technologies on architectural output, classifying them into two types: the investigative model (which is constructed according to specific data and architectural documentation) and the speculative model (which the architect proposes for the general architectural form using modern technologies).

Finally, Dr. Ali Majid Hamid explained the importance of 3D printing technology in the field of execution, referring to it as the major technical revolution in architectural formation
.
Dr. Majid clarified that these technologies have eliminated classical constraints and engineering molds through the use of serial layering techniques and novel materials.

He also recommended the necessity of updating local Iraqi building codes to accommodate the capabilities of these technologies in the fields of building and construction.

The workshop included a display of diverse engineering and architectural models produced using 3D printing techniques by students of the Architecture Engineering Department, under the supervision of the department’s faculty.

In a gesture of appreciation for their valuable scientific efforts, the Dean of the College of Engineering, Assistant Professor Dr. Amjed Saleh Mahmood, honored both Prof. Dr. Muwafaq Jawad Al-Taee and Dr. Kadhim Faris Dhamad in his office, acknowledging their distinguished contributions to enriching the workshop.

This workshop, which combined academic expertise with the latest technological advancements, affirms the University of Samarra’s commitment to keeping pace with global engineering developments.
