The University of Samarra – College of Education discusses in a master’s study ((Estimation of some heavy elements, fungi and bacteria in the soil and some plants in the area surrounding the Samarra Power Station))

The Department of Biology at the College of Education at the University of Samarra discussed the master’s thesis entitled “Estimation of some heavy elements, fungi and bacteria in the soil and some plants in the area surrounding the Samarra Power Station” by the student (Mustafa Ali Saeed).
The study found a high concentration of heavy metals in the soil inside the station for the three studied elements (lead, cadmium, and nickel) with percentages of (128.31, 7.52, 77.60) mg. kg-1.

The results also showed that the soil of the studied sites, especially the sites located towards the wind, contained the highest concentration of lead element (118.66) mg. kg-1 and cadmium (6.11) mg. kg-1, and elemental nickel (62.15) mg. kg-1 as the concentrations were higher than the concentrations of the control soil and also exceeded the limits allowed by the Food and World Health Organization (WHO/FAO 2007).

The results of the studied plants showed a direct relationship between them and the soil concentrations during the study period, as there was a significant increase in the concentrations of heavy metals (lead, cadmium, and nickel) in the study plants inside the station.
As for the microorganisms (bacteria and fungi), the results showed that the number of bacterial and fungal colonies increased in the unpolluted soils (control) compared to the polluted soils (inside and outside the station), especially in the locations that are located towards the prevailing winds in the study area, as the number of bacteria ranged between ( 11 * and 106 * 83), as well as the fungal growth between (Few growth and Moderate growth).

This study is considered one of the qualitative research that has a scientific rooting in its content, especially regarding the new results that it presented according to the opinion of the discussion committee.
