Government Media and Communication Unit Distributes Awareness Leaflets on the Risks of Irregular Migration

In line with the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and in accordance with the ministerial letter issued by the Research and Development Department / Development Division regarding the intensification of awareness efforts related to the issue of irregular migration, the Government Media and Communication Unit at the College of Education for Humanities – University of Samarra implemented an awareness campaign that included the distribution of informational leaflets throughout the college premises.

The leaflets explained the concept of irregular migration as the movement of individuals between countries

outside the legally approved frameworks, highlighting its multiple causes, including economic factors such as unemployment and low income, political factors related to conflicts and instability, as well as social and environmental factors.

The awareness materials focused on the risks associated with this type of migration, foremost among them exposure to exploitation by smuggling networks and human trafficking, health risks during unsafe journeys, loss of legal rights, and difficulties in accessing basic services, in addition to the constant anxiety resulting from the possibility of detention or deportation.

With regard to solutions, the leaflets pointed to available legal alternatives, such as regular migration for the purposes of work, study, or humanitarian asylum, while also emphasizing the role of local development, job creation, and awareness of the real dangers of irregular migration as effective tools to curb this phenomenon.

It is worth noting that the campaign aimed to raise students’ level of awareness and promote a culture of informed decision-making, in line with the educational and media role of the college, and to affirm its commitment to implementing ministerial directives related to societal issues with humanitarian and national dimensions.
