The Department of History at the College of Education for Humanities, University of Samarra, organized a scientific seminar entitled “The Role of the Police Throughout History: From the Arab Islamic State to Modern Iraq”, in celebration of the Iraqi Police Day, which falls on January 9, and on the occasion of the 104th anniversary of its establishment. The seminar was presented by Dr. Omar Sajid Mukhlif and Dr. Hanan Mahmoud Abdulrahim.

Dr. Mukhlif opened the seminar by discussing the police in the Arab Islamic state and the development of security institutions, explaining their roles in maintaining order and clarifying the principles and values upon which their duties were founded throughout different eras. He emphasized the importance of understanding this historical legacy and linking it to contemporary practice.

On the other hand, Dr. Hanan Mahmoud Abdulrahim addressed the emergence of the police in the modern Iraqi state, focusing on the legal and administrative developments it underwent, its role in strengthening internal security and protecting state sovereignty, as well as the challenges it faced at various stages of its history.

The seminar concluded with both speakers stressing that awareness of the history of the police contributes to appreciating the efforts and sacrifices made by security institutions, and reflects the close connection between historical heritage and contemporary police practice in Iraq, making the celebration of Police Day a national occasion that highlights the vital role of this institution in safeguarding security and order.
