The Department of Arabic Language Organizes a Scientific Seminar on the Impact of Arabic Linguistic Sciences on Understanding the Qur’anic Text
The Department of Arabic Language at the College of Education for Humanities, University of Samarra, organized a specialized scientific seminar discussing the importance of Arabic linguistic sciences in understanding the Qur’anic text and the Prophetic Sunnah, as well as in deriving juristic rulings. The seminar was held as part of the department’s scientific activities in line with academic guidance and in celebration of the National Day of the Holy Qur’an.
The seminar was entitled “The Impact of Arabic Linguistic Sciences on Understanding the Qur’anic Text and Deriving Juristic Rulings” and was delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Qais Alawi Khalaf, Dr. Suhaib Abdul Rahim Hamid, and Assistant Lecturer Sabah Khalaf Ali.
Dr. Khalaf opened the seminar by discussing the rhetorical and linguistic inimitability of the Holy Qur’an, explaining that the emergence of Arabic linguistic sciences was aimed at preserving the Arabic tongue and facilitating an accurate understanding of revelation. He emphasized that mastering these sciences is fundamental to comprehending Qur’anic meanings, citing Qur’anic linguistic examples that demonstrate the role of ellipsis and estimation in determining meaning.
In a related context, Dr. Hamid highlighted the danger of interpreting the Qur’anic text without proper knowledge of the Arabic language, calling for adherence to established scientific methodologies. He reviewed the origins of the Arabic language and the role of the Companions and Successors in systematizing its rules in service of Islamic law, clarifying the impact of grammatical principles on deriving Islamic legal rulings.
Furthermore, Mr. Ali pointed to the importance of studying grammar according to the methodology of classical scholars and progressing gradually through their works, due to its role in strengthening the understanding of religious texts and developing students’ linguistic competence.
The seminar concluded with an emphasis on the fact that integration between Arabic linguistic sciences and Islamic sciences constitutes a fundamental pillar for a sound understanding of the Qur’anic text and enhances rigorous academic research in Islamic studies.
