College of Engineering Discusses the Role of Infrastructure in Achieving Social Justice and Sustainable Development in a Workshop

The Human Rights Unit at the College of Engineering, University of Samarra—represented by its head, Jurist Omar Saad Hamed—organized a specialized workshop titled “Infrastructure and the Importance of Citizens’ Rights.” The workshop was presented by Assistant Lecturer Ahmed Dhiaa Abdul-Latif, a faculty member in the Civil Engineering Department, to highlight the pivotal role of infrastructure in achieving sustainable development.
The presenter reviewed the close link between the quality of public services and the respect for fundamental constitutional rights, such as the right to adequate housing and a clean environment. He emphasized that providing electricity, water, and roads is not a grant but a legal entitlement that requires strategic planning and strict oversight to reduce waste and corruption.
The workshop witnessed extensive discussions regarding the reality of service projects and the challenges facing their implementation. It focused on the necessity of activating legal accountability and involving academic expertise in planning to ensure fair distribution across different regions.
The workshop concluded with recommendations calling for the updating of relevant legislation and the adoption of quality and sustainability standards. This was accompanied by the distribution of educational brochures promoting a strategic vision that links infrastructure quality to the protection of citizens’ rights as a pillar of development and service justice.
It is worth noting that these efforts aim to consolidate the community’s right to a safe environment by enhancing public participation and ensuring institutional trust. This ultimately leads to activating social responsibility in protecting public facilities to ensure the sustainability of services and improve the quality of life for all.
