Towards an Academic and Social Balance: The College of Engineering Discusses Mechanisms for Protecting Student Mental Health

The University Psychological Counseling Unit at the College of Engineering, University of Samarra, organized an awareness seminar titled “Mental Health for University Students: Prevention and Treatment.” The seminar was delivered by Mr. Laith Amjad Hameed, a faculty member in the Department of Civil Engineering, as part of the college’s efforts to enhance psychological awareness and demonstrate its pivotal impact on achieving academic and social balance for students.
The presenter highlighted the concept of mental health as a state of emotional balance and the ability to adapt to the pressures of university life. He outlined the challenges students face, such as future anxiety, academic pressure, and adjustment difficulties, along with the resulting negative indicators like stress, sleep disorders, and poor concentration, which require early attention.
At the same time, the seminar provided an integrated vision for prevention by adopting a healthy lifestyle, organizing time, and developing stress management skills. It emphasized the importance of the therapeutic aspect through seeking professional help from psychological counselors, viewing psychological consultation as a positive step toward recovery and improving academic performance.
The seminar concluded by affirming that mental health is the cornerstone of personal and academic success, and it is a shared responsibility between the student and the educational institution to create a safe and stable university environment.
