Human Rights Unit Organizes a Seminar on World Intellectual Property Day

The Human Rights Unit, in cooperation with the Scientific Affairs Division at the College of Education for Pure Sciences – University of Samarra, organized a seminar on “World Intellectual Property Day,” presented by Dr. Barda Anwar Jassim and Assistant Lecturer Mahasin Raad Mahmoud.

The presenters aimed to explain the main types of intellectual property, such as copyright, patents, and trademarks, in addition to highlighting their role in protecting creators’ rights and encouraging them to continue scientific and intellectual production. The seminar also addressed mechanisms for protecting these rights and the importance of legally registering them to reduce violations such as plagiarism and piracy.

Dr. Jassim emphasized the close relationship between intellectual property protection and sustainable development, noting that protecting innovations contributes to stimulating investment, transferring technology, and developing various sectors, which positively reflects on improving quality of life and supporting a knowledge-based economy.

For her part, Mahasin concluded the seminar with a set of recommendations, cooperation with international organizations, particularly the World Intellectual Property Organization, activating laws that protect intellectual property, and adopting modern methods to safeguard rights. These efforts aim to build an aware and creative society capable of keeping pace with future developments. The recommendations also stressed the importance of raising community awareness about respecting intellectual property rights, supporting creators, linking their outputs to societal needs, and enhancing the role of educational and governmental institutions in this field.
