A Faculty Member in the Department of Chemistry Publishes a Scientific Paper in Scopus (Q1)
Dr. Osama Ahmed Yaseen, a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry, College of Education for Pure Sciences – University of Samarra, has published a scientific paper in the Journal of Molecular Structure, issued by the international publisher Elsevier. The journal is ranked within the first quartile (Q1) in both Scopus and Clarivate databases.
The research is entitled: “Schiff Base Complexes Incorporating Mn(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) Cations: Synthesis, Density Functional Theory (DFT) Calculations, and Biological Activity.”
The study aims to investigate the effect of the type of metal ion on physicochemical properties and antibacterial activity. This was achieved by synthesizing a new Schiff base derivative (HCPfide) via a condensation reaction between sulfacetamide and 4,5-dibromo-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde, followed by its use as a ligand to prepare a series of metal complexes with Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) ions.
The results revealed that the synthesized complexes exhibit significant biological activity. Notably, the zinc complex demonstrated the highest inhibitory activity against bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, with an effectiveness approaching that of the standard antibiotic tetracycline. Furthermore, the study showed that the chelation process enhances the lipophilicity of the compounds, facilitating their penetration through bacterial cell membranes and thereby improving their biological efficacy.
