A group of female faculty members from the Department of Life Sciences publish a research paper indexed in Scopus

A group of female faculty members from the Department of Life Sciences at the College of Education for Pure Sciences – University of Samarra, namely Assistant Lecturer Kholoud Waleed Saleh, Assistant Lecturer Israa Abdulmunim Yaseen, and Assistant Lecturer Ghufran Abbas Mohammed, have published a scientific research paper in the AIP Conference Proceedings, which is indexed in Scopus within the fourth quartile (Q4).

Their research, entitled “The Effect of Different Crude Extracts of Olive Leaves on the Growth of Some Pathogenic Dermatophytes,” aimed to present a modern scientific study with promising results on the use of olive leaf extracts in combating fungi, highlighting the effect of the solvent type used in the extraction process on the efficiency and chemical composition of the extract.

The study showed that extracting olive leaves using 80% ethanol resulted in a shiny olive-green extract with a high extraction yield of 33.3%, compared to extraction using diethyl ether, which yielded a lower percentage of 10%. Additionally, bark extraction using ethanol produced a dark brown extract with a yield of 10%.

The phytochemical screening results revealed that leaf extracts, before and during the flowering stage, contained a wide range of active compounds, including flavonoids, glycosides, tannins, volatile oils, terpenes, saponins, and phenolic compounds.

The findings confirmed the potential of olive leaf extracts as a promising natural source for developing antifungal agents, while emphasizing the need for further studies to enhance their efficiency and improve their therapeutic applications.
