A Scientific Seminar at the College of Engineering Discusses the Risks of Climate Change and Desertification in Iraq
The Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Samarra organized a specialized scientific seminar titled \”From Climate Change to Desertification: A Dual Threat to Iraq\’s Future.\” The seminar was presented by postgraduate student Qamar Ismail Ahmed, as part of the activities of Sustainability Week.
The presenter outlined the escalating environmental challenges facing the country as a result of global climate changes and their direct impacts on natural and economic systems, particularly in the arid regions within which Iraq is located.
At the same time, the researcher highlighted the close relationship between rising temperatures, fluctuating rainfall rates, the accelerating pace of soil degradation, and the loss of fertility. She emphasized that human activities and greenhouse gas emissions remain the primary drivers of these phenomena, which have led to an increase in dust storms and a decline in local agricultural production.
Furthermore, Ismail focused on the vital role and responsibility placed on engineers to innovate sustainable technical and managerial solutions. This can be achieved through improving water resource management and adopting sound environmental planning to reduce carbon emissions, while recommending the expansion of afforestation projects and green buffers.
The seminar concluded by emphasizing the importance of integrating efforts between academic institutions and government entities to adopt comprehensive national strategies. These strategies should ensure the mitigation of this environmental crisis\’s repercussions and secure a sustainable future for future generations in Iraq.
