Physics Department Organizes a Training Course on Biological Applications of Lasers in Disease Treatment
The Physics Department at the College of Education for Pure Sciences – University of Samarra organized a training course entitled “Biological Applications of Lasers and Their Applications in Disease Treatment,” presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Auras Abdulhadi Hussein.
The course aimed to explain the concept of biophysics of lasers and the mechanism of laser radiation interaction with living tissues, as well as highlighting its most important modern medical and therapeutic applications in disease diagnosis and treatment.
The lecturer explained the physical mechanisms on which laser technology depends, including light absorption and thermal and chemical effects in dealing with biological tissues with high precision while preserving the surrounding healthy cells.
The instructor also outlined the types of effects resulting from the interaction of light photons with cells, including the photothermal effect, which is used to seal blood vessels during surgical procedures, in addition to photoablation, which is used to break down solid bodies such as kidney stones and remove skin pigments, as well as the photochemical effect, which relies on the interaction of light with photosensitive substances to destroy cancer cells without harming healthy tissues.
Furthermore, the course presenter emphasized the importance of lasers in treating various medical conditions, including removing scars and burn marks and treating vitiligo. She also highlighted the use of Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) in stimulating cells, enhancing blood circulation, accelerating wound healing, reducing inflammation, and relieving joint and muscle pain. In addition, laser technology is widely utilized in modern medical applications due to its advantages, including reduced bleeding, lower risk of infection transmission, and faster recovery compared with conventional surgical procedures.
