University of Samarra monitors organic waste and launches initiatives to reduce food waste

The University of Samarra continued its efforts by reducing organic waste production this year from 240 tons to 210 tons, through reuse and recycling methods that included food leftovers, leaves, and other organic materials.
The university explained that these measures are part of its plan to address food waste, which is considered one of the major environmental challenges in Iraq.

Reports indicated that Iraq wastes about 6 million tons of food annually, with expectations that the amount will rise to 7 million tons. The reports also noted that social traditions, especially during festivals and holidays, are the main cause of this waste.

The university confirmed that these initiatives aim to strengthen environmental sustainability and reduce the carbon footprint, contributing to a more conscious and eco‑friendly campus environment.
