University of Samarra reduces organic waste and calls for action against food waste
The University of Samarra announced its success in reducing organic waste production last year from 240 tons to 210 tons, through reuse and recycling methods that included food leftovers, leaves, and other organic materials. The university explained that these efforts are part of its plan to address food waste, which represents one of Iraq’s major environmental challenges.
Reports indicated that Iraq wastes about 6 million tons of food annually, with expectations that the amount will rise to 7 million tons. The reports also noted that social traditions, especially during festivals and holidays, are the main cause of this waste.
The university confirmed that these initiatives aim to strengthen environmental sustainability and reduce the carbon footprint, contributing to a more eco‑friendly and conscious campus environment.
