The Department of Arabic Language discussed a Master’s thesis on Ibn Hisham’s position regarding the grammatical views of Al-Zamakhshari
The Department of Arabic Language at the College of Education for Humanities held the public defense of the master’s thesis submitted by the student Ayman Ibrahim Ali, entitled: “Ibn Hisham’s Position on Al-Zamakhshari’s Grammatical Views in His Gloss on Al-Tibyan.”
The thesis aimed to study the grammatical positions adopted by Ibn Hisham in his marginal notes on the book Al-Tibyan, and to uncover the nature of the scholarly and intellectual relationship that connected him to Al-Zamakhshari’s grammatical opinions, by analyzing points of agreement and disagreement between them on a number of grammatical issues.
In his study, the student highlighted the scholarly value embedded in Ibn Hisham’s glosses on Al-Tibyan, describing them as a critical text that includes in-depth scholarly discussions of Al-Zamakhshari’s views. These glosses were not limited to explanation and commentary, but rather represented a field of academic dialogue and grammatical criticism based on analysis and argumentation.
In conclusion, the findings revealed Ibn Hisham’s methodological tendency, as he made semantic and rhetorical meaning a key criterion in directing syntactic interpretation and preferring grammatical opinions. In this respect, he converges with Al-Zamakhshari in their shared concern for meaning, while differing in several grammatical applications and sub-issues.
