University of Samarra strengthens toxic waste management system and launches sustainable safety initiatives
The University of Samarra announced significant progress in toxic waste treatment this year, successfully reducing its volume to 3.5 tons through reuse and recycling programs that included electronic waste and laboratory chemicals. The university emphasized that these efforts were carried out in partnership with the Civil Defense Directorate and the CBRN Committee, which regularly monitor university laboratories to ensure the safe handling of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear materials.
Hazardous waste is carefully sorted and sent to recycling plants operated by the Samarra Municipality, while specialized workshops and training sessions were organized to enhance the efficiency of academic and research staff in managing toxic waste.
In addition, the university launched the Future Policy Award 2025, inspired by United Nations programs and international organizations such as UNEP, ILO, and OECD, aiming to reinforce safe environmental policies and promote a culture of sustainable responsibility.
The university highlighted that these initiatives are part of its vision to build a comprehensive environmental safety framework, reducing risks and ensuring a safe and sustainable academic environment for future generations.
