For the first time ever… University of Samarra hosts a running marathon as part of Sustainability Week activities
Today, Wednesday, April 29, 2026, Samarra University witnessed a distinctive sporting event represented by a running marathon organized by the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences on the main 100th Street in the city.
The marathon took place under the slogan “Sport is the Path to Permanent Sustainability,” as part of the University’s Sustainable Week activities, with the participation of more than 200 male and female students from various colleges of the university, a phenomenon reflecting the vibrant spirit and youthful ambition.
The event was attended by the university’s Vice Rectors assistants for scientific and administrative affairs, along with some college deans and their assistants, in addition to a gathering of ranks and individuals from the security forces in Samarra, as well as a number of students and their families.
In the same context, the event commenced with verses from the Holy Quran, followed by a minute of silence in honor and veneration of the souls of Iraq’s righteous martyrs, and then the playing of the Iraqi national anthem.
For his part, the university Vice Rector for scientific affairs delivered the university’s speech, in which he affirmed the importance of sports, which is no longer just a physical activity but a complete lifestyle aimed at creating a vital balance between intellectual and physical abilities, noting that the students, through their participation, embody their ambition to run towards a promising future.
Meanwhile, the Dean of the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences emphasized, in his speech, the strategic dimensions of sports, explaining that it has transcended being a recreational activity to become a fundamental pillar, especially since the sustainability of societies begins with building a conscious individual who realizes the value of sports in enhancing their health and development.
From another angle, the university’s advanced management presented the trophies for the first three places to the winning students, and the championship medals to the top ten winners for both genders, followed by the College of Physical Education honoring the university’s leadership, prominent figures, and the organizing committee of the first marathon.
It is worth mentioning that this event is part of the university’s ongoing efforts to enhance sports culture among its students, believing in the role of sports in preparing a generation that enjoys health, is dominated by awareness and good citizenship, and aspires to a sustainable environment.
