Training Course on Biosafety and Biosecurity in Chemical Laboratories
The College of Applied Sciences at the University of Samarra held an educational course titled “Biosafety and Biosecurity in Biological and Clinical Laboratories,” presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Mithaq Nizhan Mahmoud and Dr. Israa Ali Abdul Karim.
The lecturers aimed to define the concept of chemical safety and security in laboratories to provide a safe and effective working environment for those in scientific and research fields. They also clarified the types of hazardous chemicals and the necessary precautions to avoid risks from toxic and flammable substances.
The course highlighted the importance of biosafety in laboratories, especially when handling microorganisms, and outlined biological hazards in labs, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and laboratory animals that can cause various diseases.
In this context, the course concluded with recommendations emphasizing the control of these hazards, whether biological or chemical, by following specific laboratory guidelines. Additionally, it stressed the importance of establishing, designing, and equipping laboratories appropriately, as well as the necessity of training laboratory personnel in occupational safety.
