Sustainable Agriculture and Its Role in Promoting Human Rights and Achieving Food Security

The College of Agriculture at Samarra University organized a scientific seminar entitled “Sustainable Agriculture and the Protection of Human Rights.” The seminar aimed to highlight the relationship between sustainable development and fundamental human rights, and to demonstrate the importance of building sustainable food systems that contribute to achieving food security and protecting natural resources.

The seminar addressed the connection between this topic and Sustainable Development Goal 2, “Zero Hunger,” by focusing on the right to food, the right to a healthy environment, and the right to decent work, as fundamental rights that contribute to achieving social and economic stability.

The seminar also included an introduction to the concept of sustainable agriculture and its importance in producing food in ways that preserve soil, water, and biodiversity for future generations. Furthermore, it addressed reducing reliance on harmful pesticides and chemical fertilizers, supporting family and small-scale farming that can withstand climate change, and minimizing food loss and waste. The seminar was presented by:

Assistant Lecturer Mohammed Hassan Saeed

Assistant Teacher Ola Emad Mohammed

The seminar addressed the close relationship between sustainable agriculture and human rights, focusing on ensuring a continuous supply of safe and healthy food, protecting the rights of farmers and agricultural workers, guaranteeing safe working conditions and fair wages, and promoting the right of local communities to participate in decisions related to land and natural resources.

The seminar emphasized that achieving sustainable agricultural development is not limited to increasing production; it also requires preserving human dignity and rights, thus ensuring a food system capable of meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
