A Faculty Member from the College of Applied Sciences Publishes a Scientific Paper in Scopus Q4 Journals

Dr. Saeb Jasim Muhammad, a lecturer in the Department of Biotechnology at the College of Applied Sciences – University of Samarra, has published a scientific paper indexed in Scopus Q4 journals in the journal Microbial Biosystems, a specialized journal in microbiology published in Egypt, entitled:

“Design of a filter using Spirulina sp. powder for the treatment of three different types of wastewaters.”

The study aims to design a three-layer filtration system for treating industrial wastewater, consisting of sand, carbon powder, and Spirulina sp. powder. The efficiency of each filtration type was evaluated separately by collecting contaminated water samples from three industrial wastewater treatment sites in Samarra city, and conducting laboratory tests to determine pollution levels before treatment.

The study reached several important findings, most notably:
• The raw untreated water exceeded permissible limits according to World Health Organization (WHO) standards and Iraqi regulations.
• High efficiency in pollutant removal after treatment.
• A significant reduction in pollutant concentrations across all tested samples.
• High removal rates, especially in wastewater generated from car wash stations.

This research represents an important scientific contribution in the field of wastewater treatment using biological materials, and reflects a promising approach toward developing environmentally friendly and effective technologies to reduce water pollution.
