Two Faculty Members from the College of Applied Sciences Publish a Research Paper in a Scopus- and Clarivate-Indexed Journal

Dr. Rafid Majid Makhlif and Assistant Lecturer Ahmed Ayoub Ibrahim, faculty members at the College of Applied Sciences, University of Samarra, have published a scientific research paper entitled:

“Biosynthesized Spinel Co₃O₄ Coatings with Engineered Surface Properties for Biofilm Resistance: XPS Investigation of Surface Changes after Biofilm Formation and Hemocompatibility Assessment”

The study was published in the Applied Surface Science journal, which is ranked in the first quartile (Q1) and indexed in both Scopus and Clarivate databases.

The research aimed to develop innovative biogenic nanocoatings of cobalt oxide (Co₃O₄) using a green synthesis approach based on Leucaena leucocephala leaf extract. The study investigated the relationship between the surface chemical properties of the synthesized nanomaterial and its ability to inhibit bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation.

Furthermore, advanced surface characterization techniques, particularly X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), were employed to monitor the surface modifications of the coatings before and after bacterial exposure. This enabled a detailed understanding of the mechanism underlying biofilm resistance while confirming the coating’s high antibacterial performance and excellent hemocompatibility, highlighting its strong potential for applications in medical devices and anti-infective surface coatings.
