A faculty member in the Department of Arabic at the College of Education for Humanities, University of Samarra, Professor Dr. Niran Kanaan Mohammed, has published a research paper entitled: “Supplementation of Morphological Patterns to Sibawayh: Its Nature and Causes” in the Journal of Language Studies, issued by the College of Education for Women – University of Tikrit, in Volume 10, Issue 1, Part 2 (2026).

The research addresses the issue of scholars’ supplementations to Sibawayh regarding morphological patterns used by the Arabs but not mentioned in his book, or those considered as such by some scholars. This topic has witnessed notable expansion since the fourth century AH and beyond, which has granted it significant scholarly importance in morphological studies.

The study focuses on analyzing the underlying reasons behind these supplementations. The researcher arrived at several findings, most notably: differences in the linguistic evidence adopted for argumentation, as well as variations in scholars’ views on derivation, the identification of root and additional letters, and the shift of words between nominal, adjectival, and verbal forms.

In the same context, the researcher pointed out weaknesses in some narrations or the singularity of their transmitters, in addition to the occurrence of certain expressions within the context of poetic necessity. There is also the possibility that some morphological patterns emerged or became widespread after the time of Sibawayh, reflecting the diversity of reasons behind such supplementations in the Arabic linguistic heritage.
