Dr. Mohammed Khalil Jasim, a lecturer in the Department of Geography at the College of Education for Human Sciences, University of Samarra, published a scientific research paper entitled:
“Determinants of Agricultural Gross Domestic Product Growth under External Trade Fluctuations and the Efficiency of Agricultural Investment in Iraq for the Period (1990–2024)”
The paper was published in the peer-reviewed international journal IOSR Journal of Economics and Finance (IOSR-JEF), Volume 17, Issue 2, Version 3, during March–April 2026, pp. 1–11.
The study aimed to examine the factors affecting the growth of agricultural GDP in Iraq, focusing on the impact of external trade represented by agricultural exports and imports, in addition to the efficiency of agricultural investment and its effect on the path of agricultural economic growth.
The researcher adopted an analytical econometric approach using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model and the Error Correction Model (ECM) to analyze economic relationships in both the short and long term.
The findings revealed an inverse relationship between increasing agricultural imports and domestic agricultural output due to the impact of imported goods on local products. The study also showed the slow response of agricultural investment efficiency to structural challenges, including water scarcity.
In conclusion, the researcher emphasized the importance of revising trade policies to protect strategic agricultural commodities and directing investments toward modern irrigation technologies to improve production efficiency and reduce import costs, thereby enhancing food security and reducing dependence on oil revenues.
