Department of Qur\’anic Sciences and Islamic Education Discusses a PhD Dissertation on Auditory Narrations in the Exegesis of Imam Abu Nasr Al-Qushayri
The Department of Qur’anic Sciences and Islamic Education at the College of Education for Human Sciences, University of Samarra, discussed the PhD dissertation submitted by lecturer Haider Abdul Fattah Jaafar, entitled:
“Auditory Matters in Al-Taysir fi Al-Tafsir by Imam Abu Nasr Al-Qushayri (d. 514 AH): A Doctrinal Study”on Thursday, June 4, 2026
The study aimed to demonstrate the epistemological and methodological significance of auditory matters (al-sam‘iyyat) in Islamic theological thought, as they constitute the third principal pillar of Islamic theology after divinity and prophethood. It also sought to highlight the scholarly value of Al-Taysir fi Al-Tafsir and the status of its author, Imam Abu Nasr Al-Qushayri, while shedding light on his theological methodology through his exegetical efforts and examining the extent of harmony between his theological approach and spiritual inclination in addressing auditory matters.
The dissertation was divided into four chapters. The first chapter introduced Imam Abu Nasr Al-Qushayri and his book. The second chapter was devoted to the study of death and life in the intermediate state (Barzakh). The third chapter examined the signs of the Hour, both minor and major, while the fourth chapter addressed issues related to auditory matters after the Day of Resurrection.
The researcher reached several conclusions, most notably that Imam Abu Nasr Al-Qushayri successfully combined the sciences of Qur’anic exegesis and Islamic creed in addressing theological issues. His treatment of auditory matters was based on adherence to revealed texts while employing reason to clarify meanings and refute misconceptions, emphasizing that divine revelation is the ultimate source of unseen matters. The study further showed that Al-Taysir fi Al-Tafsir represents an important scholarly source that integrates traditional exegesis with theological analysis and provides researchers with the opportunity to derive the doctrinal principles adopted by Islamic intellectual schools during his era.
On this occasion, the Media and Government Communication Division of the College of Education for Human Sciences extends its sincere congratulations and best wishes to Dr. Haider Abdul Fattah Jaafar on obtaining his PhD degree, wishing him continued success and excellence in his academic and scholarly career. The division hopes that this achievement will contribute to enriching scientific and intellectual progress with further distinction and accomplishments.
