Faculty Member in the Department of History Publishes a Book on Qatari Foreign Policy
A new scholarly book by Professor Dr. Zuhair Qasim Mohammed, a faculty member in the Department of History at the College of Education for Human Sciences – University of Samarra, has recently been published under the title “Qatar and Foreign Policy (1971–1995)”. The book examines the course of Qatar’s foreign policy from its independence in 1971 until the end of the rule of Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani in 1995. Dr. Mohammed addresses Qatar’s foreign policy within its Gulf, Arab, and Asian surroundings, in addition to its orientations at the international level, providing an analysis of the determinants and foundations of this policy in the post-independence period. This approach highlights how Qatar succeeded in consolidating its presence on the international political map. The study focuses on presenting an analytical description of the trajectory of Qatari foreign policy and the political transformations that accompanied it, while identifying the most prominent challenges and problems faced by the state at both the internal and external levels. The author also highlights a set of key foundations and essential factors that contributed to shaping Qatar’s foreign policy, foremost among them strategic considerations and the supreme national interest, alongside economic, geographic, cultural, demographic, and religious factors. The study concludes that the interaction of these factors formed the backbone upon which Qatar’s foreign policy was built during a pivotal stage of its political history, granting the work significant scholarly value for researchers and those interested in foreign policy studies and the history of the Arab Gulf states.
