The Department of History is organizing a scientific seminar on the impact of smartphones on the academic achievement of university students

The Department of History at the College of Education for Humanities, University of Samarra, organized a seminar entitled “The Impact of Smartphones on the Academic Achievement of University Students,” presented by lecturer Ahmed Abdulrahman Jassim.

At the outset, he explained that smartphones represent a dual-use tool, with effects that fluctuate between enhancement and hindrance depending on the student’s level of awareness and how they are utilized. He pointed out that weak self-regulation can turn them into a source of distraction and digital addiction, negatively affecting academic performance and cognitive abilities.

He then noted that adopting supportive university policies, along with well-designed educational strategies, can enable the effective use of this technology to enhance interactive learning and expand access to knowledge, in line with the demands of modern education.

In conclusion, he emphasized the importance of preparing students as self-regulated learners who are capable of managing their use of digital technologies efficiently, achieving a balance between academic benefits and the challenges of the digital environment.
