A group of faculty members from the Department of Biology publish a joint scientific paper in the journal Microbial Biosystems

Professor Dr. Rana Ibrahim Khaleel, Assistant Professor Dr. Afrah Toma Khalaf, and Dr. Aqeel Majid Ahmed have published a joint scientific paper in the journal Microbial Biosystems, which specializes in microbiology and is published in the Arab Republic of Egypt. The journal is indexed in Scopus and classified within the fourth quartile (Q4).

The study is entitled: “Design of a filter using Spirulina powder for the treatment of three different types of wastewater.”

The researchers aimed to design a three-layer filter for the treatment of industrial wastewater, consisting of sand, carbon powder, and Spirulina sp. powder. Each type of filter was tested separately by collecting contaminated water samples from three industrial wastewater treatment sites in the city of Samarra. Laboratory analyses were conducted prior to treatment to determine the level of pollution.

The results showed that the values of untreated raw water exceeded the permissible limits according to the standards of the World Health Organization and Iraqi water quality standards. The findings also demonstrated high efficiency in removing pollutants, as their concentrations significantly decreased after treatment. Statistical analyses revealed high removal rates, particularly in the treatment of wastewater from car wash stations.
