A Group of Faculty Members from the Department of Physics Publish a Scientific Research within Scopus-Indexed Journals

Professor Dr. Omar Fadhil Abdullah, Assistant Professor Dr. Ouras Abdulhadi Hussein, and Assistant Lecturer Marwan Abdul Karim Abdulbaqi, faculty members of the Department of Physics at the College of Education for Pure Sciences – University of Samarra, have published a scientific research paper in the journal Physics and Chemistry of Solid State, which is indexed in Scopus within the third quartile (Q3) and has a citation index of 1.9.

The researchers presented their study entitled “A Structural and Mechanical Study for the Conservation of Archaeological Aluminum Brass (Al-brass) Alloy Using the Simulation Method.”

The study aimed to investigate the casting process of aluminum brass alloy produced with a composition of (76% copper, 22% zinc, and 2% aluminum), as well as to examine the effect of chemical treatment according to the methods used in archaeological conservation.

The researchers applied the most relevant scientific approaches in the chemical treatment of archaeological objects for a period of 24 hours, during which the alloys were immersed in a diluted sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) solution with a concentration of 8% at room temperature. After removing the sample from the solution, rinsing it with distilled water, and drying it, a green corrosion layer (patina) (copper sulfate) formed on its surface, giving it a vibrant red color.

The damaged alloy exhibited the lowest levels of structural properties with a low hardness value, compared to the laser-treated sample, which showed the best structural properties. The results of X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy imaging, and hardness measurements demonstrated that this method is effective for conservation purposes.
