Department of Chemistry Holds Seminar on Women’s Empowerment: Opportunities and Challenges
The Department of Chemistry at the College of Education for Pure Sciences – University of Samarra held a scientific seminar titled “Women’s Empowerment: Opportunities and Challenges,” presented by Assistant Professor Sara Saad Mohammed Jawad and Dr. Wafaa Naseef Jassim.
The presenters emphasized that empowering women means granting them the ability and opportunities to fully participate in all aspects of life. They noted that the world has witnessed significant progress in this field through improved access to education and employment, as well as increased awareness of women’s rights, which has contributed to strengthening their role in economic and social development.
Jawad explained that access to education, participation in the labor market, legal support, and technological advancement—which has facilitated women’s access to information and remote work—have all contributed to supporting women’s empowerment, in addition to the growing number of initiatives that promote female entrepreneurship.
On the other hand, Jassim pointed out that women still face several challenges, including social discrimination, the gender pay gap, limited access to leadership positions, as well as certain customs and traditions that hinder their full participation, alongside the challenges of balancing work and family responsibilities.
The seminar concluded by stressing the importance of joint governmental and societal efforts to reduce these challenges and expand opportunities in a way that ensures equality and justice, and enhances women’s role as active partners in the development process.
