Department of Chemistry Organizes a Scientific Seminar on Dietary Supplements
The Department of Chemistry at the College of Education for Pure Sciences – University of Samarra organized a scientific seminar entitled “Dietary Supplements and Their Role in Biological Activity,” presented by Dr. Maytham Mohammed Bakr.
The seminar aimed to highlight the biological importance of dietary supplements as significant preparations containing concentrated elements such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, and plant extracts, which support the body’s physiological needs in cases of nutritional deficiency or increased biological demands.
Dr. Bakr explained the role of certain supplements, such as branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and Omega-3, in enhancing physical and mental performance and supporting muscular and neural function. He also addressed the role of B-complex vitamins in boosting energy production, as they act as coenzymes in cellular metabolic reactions within the mitochondria, thereby improving ATP production and increasing cellular efficiency.
The seminar concluded with a set of recommendations, most notably emphasizing that dietary supplements serve as supportive tools for biological activity and are not substitutes for a balanced diet. Their use should be based on careful scientific evaluation to avoid excessive dosages or drug interactions, ensuring the desired health benefits are achieved.
