Department of Chemistry Organizes a Scientific Seminar on the Importance of Proper Hydration During High Temperatures

The Department of Chemistry at the College of Education for Pure Sciences, University of Samarra, organized a scientific seminar entitled “Proper Hydration and Its Importance During High Temperatures,” presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Iman Abbas Mohammed.

The seminar aimed to raise public awareness about the health risks associated with dehydration and to highlight the physiological mechanisms of hydration and proper nutrition during the summer season.

During the seminar, Dr. Abbas explained the body’s physiological response to high temperatures, noting that sweating is the body’s primary mechanism for regulating its internal temperature. However, this process results in the loss of significant amounts of water and essential electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium, making it necessary to replenish these fluids and minerals to maintain the body’s physiological balance and normal organ functions.

She also reviewed the health risks associated with dehydration, ranging from mild to moderate dehydration, which can cause fatigue, headache, poor concentration, and dry mouth, to heat exhaustion, characterized by low blood pressure, dizziness, nausea, and rapid heartbeat, and finally to heat stroke, a life-threatening medical emergency in which the body’s temperature rises above 40°C and requires immediate medical intervention.

At the conclusion of the seminar, Dr. Abbas emphasized that proper hydration is not simply a matter of drinking water when feeling thirsty; rather, it is the body’s first line of defense in protecting vital organs, including the heart, kidneys, and brain, from heat stress and heat-related illnesses. She also encouraged adopting healthy habits, increasing fluid intake, and following preventive measures throughout the summer season.
