Department of Physics Organizes a Training Course on Preventive and Therapeutic Procedures for X-ray Devices

The Department of Physics at the College of Education for Pure Sciences – University of Samarra organized a training course entitled “Preventive and Therapeutic Procedures for Personnel Working with X-ray Devices,” delivered by Assistant Professor Marwan Abdul Karim Abdul Baqi.

The course aimed to introduce the electromagnetic spectrum, its types and classifications, with a focus on ionizing radiation—particularly X-rays—as the scientific basis of the course. It also addressed the properties of X-rays, including their high energy, wavelengths, and frequencies, explaining their operating mechanisms and various applications.

Abdul Baqi emphasized the preventive measures that technicians and physicians working with radiographic devices should adhere to in order to reduce the risks of radiation exposure. Chief among these measures is compliance with international standards adopted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The course concluded with a set of recommendations, most notably the use of radiation dose-measuring devices to monitor accumulated exposure, consideration of exposure time, wearing specialized protective clothing and equipment to safeguard the body, as well as applying therapeutic methods and procedures to be followed in the event that a worker in this field is exposed to radiation doses exceeding permissible limits.
