Doctoral Dissertation Discussed in the Department of Biology on the Impact of Toxoplasma gondii Infection on Adhesion Molecules, Selected Chemokines, and Immune Parameters in Patients with Atheroscler
A doctoral dissertation entitled “The Impact of Toxoplasma gondii Infection on Adhesion Molecules (VCAM-1 and ICAM-1), Selected Chemokines, and Immune Parameters in Patients with Atherosclerosis in Samarra City” was discussed in the Department of Biology, College of Education for Pure Sciences, University of Samarra. The dissertation was presented by Assistant Lecturer Wasan Abdulhameed Hussein.
The study aimed to determine the prevalence of T. gondii infection among patients with atherosclerosis in Samarra City. It also investigated the serological presence of anti-T. gondii antibodies (IgM and IgG) and examined the correlation between the severity of T. gondii infection and alterations in immune and physiological parameters among patients with atherosclerosis.
The findings revealed a non-significant decrease in the level of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) among atherosclerosis patients infected with T. gondii, with a mean value of 31.350 ± 0.745 mg/dL, compared with 34.700 ± 0.923 mg/dL in atherosclerosis patients without the infection. The healthy control group recorded the highest HDL level at 53.750 ± 3.354 mg/dL.
