Human Rights Unit Organizes a Workshop on the International Day of Mass Graves
The Human Rights Unit at the College of Education for Pure Sciences, University of Samarra, organized a workshop on the occasion of the International Day of Mass Graves entitled “A History Engraved with the Agony of the Nation.” The workshop was presented by Dr. Barda Anwar Jasim and Assistant Lecturer Mustafa Ali Saeed.
The presenters highlighted the importance of documenting mass graves as evidence of painful periods in the history of nations and emphasized their role in preserving national memory, ensuring justice for victims, and achieving accountability. They also addressed the sacrifices made by the sons of the homeland in preserving the unity of the country and safeguarding human dignity, sacrifices that have contributed to shaping the present and building the future.
For his part, Saeed stressed that uncovering and documenting mass graves is not limited to legal and humanitarian aspects; rather, it represents a national and moral responsibility aimed at preserving historical truth and preventing the recurrence of violations. He further emphasized the importance of raising community awareness of human rights issues and promoting a culture of peace, coexistence, and respect for human dignity.
Jasim concluded the workshop by affirming that commemorating such events reflects loyalty to the victims and appreciation for those who contributed to building the nation. She noted that preserving national memory is a fundamental pillar in strengthening the values of justice and humanity for future generations.
The workshop also included the distribution of informational brochures to students, raising awareness about human rights and promoting the values of justice and fairness. In addition, information was provided on the International Day of Mass Graves and the objectives behind its observance, emphasizing the importance of fostering a culture of respect for human rights and honoring the sacrifices made by the people of the homeland throughout different historical periods.
