The Department of Chemistry Discusses a PhD Dissertation on Evaluating the Sensitivity and Specificity of GFAP Protein and Some Biochemical Parameters

A PhD dissertation was discussed in the Department of Chemistry, College of Education for Pure Sciences – University of Samarra, entitled: “Evaluation of the Sensitivity and Specificity of Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP) and Some Biochemical Parameters as Diagnostic Biomarkers for Multiple Sclerosis,” presented by the researcher Hammam Izzat Mohammed.

The dissertation aimed to study the diagnostic value of both GFAP and NfL, along with a number of neurological indicators, oxidative stress parameters, and lipid profile markers, in order to enhance the accuracy of early diagnosis and to better understand the pathological mechanisms associated with neurodegeneration and the progression of disability.

The results showed a significant increase in the levels of GFAP, NfL, catalase, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) in patients compared with the control group. In contrast, vitamin D3 levels and the transcription factor ATF3 were significantly decreased. In addition, ROC curve analysis indicated that the effectiveness of the catalase enzyme recorded the highest value under the curve (AUC = 0.974) at a cut-off value of >63.21 kU/L, with a sensitivity of 90% and a specificity of 96.6%, suggesting its potential as a promising biomarker for the early diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.
