Assistant Professor Dr. Zainab Abdul Majeed Khalaf Selected as a Member of a Master’s Thesis Defense Committee at the University of Baghdad
Assistant Professor Dr. Zainab Abdul Majeed Khalaf, a faculty member in the Department of Electromechanical Engineering at the University of Samarra, has been selected as a member of the defense committee for a Master’s thesis in Chemical Engineering at the University of Baghdad, submitted by the researcher Safa Nasir Mohammed.
The thesis, titled “Preparation of Electrospun Non-Woven Nanofiber Membrane for Water Desalination Using Air Gap Membrane Distillation System,” involved the innovation of advanced polymeric nanomembranes manufactured from recycled acrylic (PMMA).
The study demonstrated the high efficiency of the membranes developed using electrospinning technology compared to traditional methods; as the enhancement with silica nanoparticles (SiO_2) contributed to increasing hydrophobicity and mechanical stability, achieving exceptional results in salt rejection with a rate exceeding 99.99%.
This research represents a qualitative leap in finding sustainable and low-cost solutions for treating the salinity of the Shatt al-Arab water, serving the environmental and water needs in the southern regions of Iraq.
It is worth noting that the selection of Dr. Zainab Abdul Majeed for this committee membership comes as an affirmation of her specialized scientific expertise and an embodiment of the academic cooperation policy between the Universities of Samarra and Baghdad, ensuring the enhancement of scientific research rigor and the exchange of qualitative expertise among teaching staffs in Iraqi universities.
