College of Engineering Organizes Awareness Lecture on the Dangerous Dimensions of Climate Change and Sustainable Solutions

The College of Engineering at the University of Samarra organized a specialized awareness lecture presented by Dr. Mohammed Jamil Mahdi (Head of the Department of Architecture) for second and fourth-year students. Attended by several department heads and staff members, the lecture highlighted the dangerous dimensions of climate change resulting from human activities and the burning of fossil fuels.
The presenter reviewed the direct threats facing Iraq, providing data confirming that desertification has reached 69.5% of the country’s area, alongside the exacerbation of dust storms and the drying of the marshes. These factors place food and water security at risk and categorize Iraq among the countries most vulnerable to climate instability.
At the same time, the researcher outlined joint government efforts through the National Initiative, which formed hundreds of task forces to prepare studies on transitioning toward energy-efficient buildings and intensifying afforestation campaigns. He concluded by presenting a strategic vision that included a package of legislative and technical solutions, most notably criminalizing land degradation, adopting modern irrigation methods, and activating the (ISO50001) standard for energy conservation, as well as investing in the Green Climate Fund to enhance renewable energy and waste recycling projects.
