Future Engineers at the Heart of the National Industry: A Field Visit for Electromechanical Engineering Students to the Baiji Refinery
The Department of Electromechanical Engineering at the University of Samarra organized a field visit for fourth-stage students to the Baiji Refinery, under the direct supervision of the Head of the Department, Lecturer Omar Mohammed Ahmed, and with the participation of a distinguished group of faculty members, including Dr. Ouras Fadhil Khalaf, Dr. Shaimaa Hisham Abdul-Malik, and Assistant Lecturer Saif Waleed Majeed.
Through this initiative, the department sought to enhance the students’ practical understanding and bridge the gap between theoretical curricula and complex engineering applications within major industrial facilities.
The visit commenced with an in-depth field tour that included the rotating equipment departments of the plant, allowing students to observe operating mechanisms firsthand and learn about the meticulous maintenance procedures for various equipment and facilities.
At the same time, the student delegation moved to the self-generation power plant department, which is responsible for securing electrical energy for the refinery through an integrated generator system. They listened to a detailed explanation of the management strategies for this system, starting from the generation phases all the way to the control and technical monitoring mechanisms that ensure operational sustainability and performance efficiency.
The visit was not limited to a general overview, but also covered technical aspects related to the power plant maintenance curriculum. Experts at the refinery reviewed the nature of equipment operations as well as periodic and preventive maintenance methods. They emphasized the core focus of the specialization, which lies in the integration between electrical and mechanical systems to ensure plant operation under the highest standards of efficiency and safety, thereby providing students with a realistic insight into the requirements of field engineering work.
The visit concluded with the faculty and students expressing their profound thanks and appreciation to the engineering and technical staff at the refinery. They extended special thanks to the management and personnel of the Training and Development Department, represented by the Director (Mrs. Bushra Shaker Haibatullah), the Deputy Mutaab Maamour Abdullah, Chief Engineer Laith Khalil Ibrahim, Engineers Haider Ramadan Khalifa and Marwan Muzahim Abbas, and Photographer Omar Attallah, in appreciation of their cooperation and valuable scientific explanations that addressed the students’ inquiries.
Meanwhile, the refinery staff praised the high academic standard and outstanding discipline demonstrated by the students of the University of Samarra, emphasizing that the quality of their questions reflects a solid foundation of knowledge that excellently qualifies them to enter the labor market.
